I hear it all the time in squatting circles “if it’s not on the floor it doesn’t count”.
Is this even true? You see the only place it really counts is in strength sports, but what about everyone else?
Well, yes there are very useful applications for full depth squats but it’s important to note that the squat is simply a tool that we use to develop strength in the lower body and getting a full range of motion here will yield the most overall strength and muscular development
BUT
We all have different bone lengths, joint structures and proportions and some people are just not well suited for “ass to grass” and forcing it can actually be harmful.
There are also other movements that allow you to develop muscle and strength that don’t involve squats BUT if you love squatting like I do here are some tips:
Squat as deep as your mobility will allow
Elevate your heels to achieve more depth
Maintain a neutral pelvis, be careful to avoid a pelvic tilt at the top & a tuck at the bottom
Imagine you standing on a giant sheet of paper & you trying to tear it in half
These are just some of the things we teach our clients which has helped them move better, move more, get stronger and get leaner.
